Lighting Size Guide: 3 Designer-Approved Formulas for Choosing the Perfect Feature Lighting (So It Doesn’t Look Awkward)
There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a feature pendant light... only to have it look completely out of proportion once it's installed.
If it’s too small—it disappears.
If it’s too big—it overwhelms the room.
But don’t worry, there’s a science to getting the scale just right. Whether you're choosing lighting for a dining table, kitchen island, or open-plan living room, these simple lighting formulas take out the guesswork..
Let’s break them down.
1. The Room Size Rule: Your Go-To Formula
If you’re hanging a single pendant in the centre of a room (like a living area or bedroom), use this basic formula:
Room Length (m) × Room Width (m) ÷ 12 = Ideal pendant size in cm
Example:
A 3m x 4m room = 12
12 ÷ 12 = 1 → That means a maximum pendant size of 100cm.
Realistically? Aim for something between 60–80cm, depending on ceiling height and style.
2. The Surface Rule: Dining Tables, Kitchen Islands & More
When a pendant is hanging over a surface like a dining table, bench, or console, use this guide:
Your pendant should be between 1/3 and 1/2 the width of the surface.
Examples:
- A 200cm round dining table → choose a pendant between 65–100cm diameter
- A 60cm wide bedside table → a 20–30cm pendant works perfectly
This keeps everything feeling balanced without overwhelming the furniture—or worse, looking like it got lost mid-air.
And yes, this rule applies whether you’re using a single light or a cluster (just combine the width of the group for your calculation).
3. The Multi-Pendant Rule: For Linear Setups
Using multiple pendants above a kitchen island? Combine both size and spacing rules to get the layout right.
- The total width of all pendants + gaps should stay within 2/3 the length of your island
- Each pendant should still follow the 1/3 to 1/2 rule for its individual size
- Space pendants 30–50cm apart, and ensure equal spacing at each end
Example:
For a 180cm island, aim for 2–3 pendants that total no more than 120cm in combined width—including spacing in between.
Final Thoughts: Get the Size Right, and the Style Follows
Lighting is more than a mood-setter—it’s a design statement. But even the most stunning pendant can fall flat if the proportions are off.
Stick to these formulas, adjust for your space, and you’ll end up with lighting that looks like it was meant to be there.
